Kerala's craft identity is closely tied to its temples and its climate, courtyard homes built for the monsoon and mural painting that has decorated temple walls for centuries.

The nalukettu courtyard house and Kerala's temple mural painting tradition both developed in close relationship to the state's temple culture, already covered in this site's Tirtha & Devalaya chapter, and its heavy monsoon climate.
Coir-work from coconut fiber, Aranmula mirror casting, a mirror made from a metal alloy rather than glass, and classical dance forms like Kathakali, whose elaborate makeup and costume are themselves a craft tradition of their own, round out a state where craft, temple ritual, and performance are rarely fully separate.
