Craft & Origins

Regional wood-carving traditions vary by both wood and motif: Saharanpur in Uttar Pradesh works sheesham, rosewood, into furniture and screens, Kashmir carves walnut wood into intricate floral panels, and Gujarat and Rajasthan developed the elaborately carved wooden doors and window screens (jharokhas) still found on older havelis.
