A Maharashtrian saint-poet whose abhangs to Vithoba remain central to the Varkari tradition's devotional repertoire alongside Namdev's.
१७वीं शताब्दी · 17th century CE
Born into a trading family in Dehu, Maharashtra, Tukaram is held to have turned to devotion after a series of personal losses, composing thousands of abhangs in Marathi that combined intense personal feeling with sharp social commentary.
His verses remain widely sung during the Pandharpur Wari, the annual Varkari pilgrimage on foot to Vithoba's temple, and are considered a foundation of Marathi devotional and literary tradition alike, still recited in households across Maharashtra today.
