A decorative door-hanging strung across the top of an entrance — mango leaves and marigold for daily use, elaborately embroidered cloth for weddings and festivals.
देशव्यापी · Nationwide
The simplest torana is a string of fresh mango leaves hung across a doorway, considered auspicious and, practically, believed to purify air passing into the home; more elaborate versions use embroidered or appliqued cloth, sometimes with small hanging bells or beads, kept up through a festival season or a wedding.
A torana is hung at nearly every major household celebration covered in this site's Utsav & Parva chapter, and specific regional styles, Gujarati toran with mirror work, and heavily beaded versions from Rajasthan, are recognized enough to be sold and collected as craft objects in their own right today.
