Author of the Sushruta Samhita, a foundational surgical text describing techniques including an early form of rhinoplasty and cataract surgery.
लगभग ६ठी शताब्दी ई.पू. · circa 6th century BCE
Tradition holds Sushruta studied at Kashi (Varanasi) under the sage-physician Dhanvantari, held in the Puranas as the divine source of Ayurvedic medicine, before compiling his own teaching into the Samhita that bears his name.
The Sushruta Samhita catalogues over a hundred surgical instruments and more than 300 procedures, and its detailed classification of wound types and staged surgical training remain among the text's most distinctive contributions to the Ayurvedic tradition.
