Jagannath, Balabhadra, and Subhadra are drawn through the streets of Puri in immense wooden chariots, from the Jagannath Temple to the Gundicha Temple. Devotees of every background pull the ropes together — historically one of the few times the deities left the temple to be seen by all, regardless of who was normally allowed inside.

The chariots are rebuilt from scratch each year using specific woods from designated forest trees, a practice unbroken for centuries; Jagannath's chariot alone uses several hundred wooden pieces without a single metal nail.
Puri's yatra is echoed on a smaller scale at Jagannath temples worldwide, including well-known ISKCON processions in cities from London to San Francisco.
