Brightly colored cutout cloth patchwork from a single Odisha town, traditionally made to shade and decorate temple chariots and deity canopies.
पिपली, ओडिशा · Pipli, Odisha
Artisans cut colored cloth into floral, animal, and mythological shapes and stitch them onto a base fabric in bold, contrasting layers, a technique that developed specifically to produce the canopies, umbrellas, and wall hangings used around the Jagannath temple's rituals, already covered in this site's Tirtha & Devalaya chapter.
Pipli, a small town near Puri, remains the craft's center, with entire streets of workshops producing both temple items and, increasingly, umbrellas, lampshades, and bags for a wider commercial market.
