A rare golden-hued silk unique to Assam, prized for a natural sheen that grows richer with age and washing rather than fading.

Muga silk comes from a silkworm species found only in Assam, fed on som and sualu leaves, producing a naturally golden-yellow thread that is traditionally left undyed to preserve its distinctive color, then handwoven into mekhela chador, the traditional Assamese women's garment, and other textiles.
Muga holds Geographical Indication protection as a product unique to Assam, and finished muga garments are worn especially during Bihu, the Assamese harvest festival already covered in this site's Utsav & Parva chapter, where the fabric's golden color is considered particularly auspicious.
