Major Tirthas & Dharmic Kendrasमहातीर्थ एवं धर्मिक केन्द्र
A growing, editable register of sacred cities, river confluences, temple kshetras, Itihasa landscapes, Rishi centres and living monastic traditions. This is intentionally broader than one canonical list: different textual and regional traditions define sacred geography in different ways.
Sapta Moksha Puris
The Garuda Purana preserves the celebrated seven-city enumeration: Ayodhya, Mathura, Maya, Kashi, Kanchi, Avantika and Dvaravati. On this page, Maya is presented with the living Haridwar/Mayapuri tradition, Avantika with Ujjain, and Dvaravati with Dwarka.
Garuda Purana, Preta-kalpa 38.5–6 in a commonly circulated recension, for the Sapta Moksha Puri enumeration. Verse numbering differs across editions and should always be tied to the edition used.
Mahabharata, Vana Parva, Tirtha-yatra Parva, especially the Prayaga passages describing the Ganga–Yamuna confluence and the wider tirtha landscape.
Official temple, Devaswom, Matha, district administration and state tourism sources are linked directly on individual cards where already verified.
Future detailed profiles will add Purana/Upapurana, Agama/Tantra, Alvar/Nayanmar, Rishi/Acharya, inscriptional, architectural and archaeological references only where relevant to the specific kshetra.
Coverage note: “Major” is necessarily an editorial category. Bharat has thousands of locally and regionally important tirthas. This register is designed to keep expanding without pretending that one modern webpage can define a single final hierarchy of sacred places.
