Wife of the sage Agastya, and among the earliest named women credited with composing hymns of the Rigveda.
ऋग्वैदिक काल · Rigvedic era
Tradition holds Lopamudra was created by Agastya from the choicest parts of forest creatures and given to a childless king before being sought as a wife by Agastya himself, who trained her in the ascetic life she would come to share with him.
A dialogue hymn in the Rigveda's first mandala is attributed jointly to Lopamudra and Agastya, discussing the tension between a householder's duties and a sage's asceticism — placing her among a small number of women rishis, rishikas, credited with authorship in the Rigveda itself.
