'By whom' — an inquiry into the power behind mind, speech, and the senses, answered through the story of gods humbled by an unrecognized power they cannot name.
सामवेद के अंतर्गत · within the Samaveda
The text opens by asking who directs the mind, who first breathes the breath, then tells of the gods, flush with a victory over demons, encountering a mysterious spirit (yaksha) neither fire nor wind nor Indra can identify or overpower, until the goddess Uma-Haimavati reveals it as Brahman itself.
The story's implicit lesson, that even the gods do not fully grasp the ultimate reality behind their own power, is read as a check against spiritual pride, and Uma's role as the one who reveals this truth gives the Kena Upanishad an unusually prominent goddess figure within Upanishadic literature.
