A Gorakhpur publishing house founded in 1923 that put affordable, standardized copies of the Gita, Ramayana, and Puranas into millions of Indian homes across the 20th century.
स्थापना १९२३ · founded 1923
Founded by Jaya Dayal Goyandka and Hanuman Prasad Poddar, Gita Press set out to print accurate, inexpensive editions of Hindu scripture at a time when quality copies were costly and inconsistent, using its own monthly magazine, Kalyan, to reach a wide readership alongside its books.
It remains, by volume, among the largest publishers of religious texts in the world, with its editions of the Ramcharitmanas and Bhagavad Gita often the first, and for many households the only, printed copy of these texts ever owned, shaping how millions encountered scripture directly rather than only through oral tradition.
