A philosopher who publicly challenged the sage Yajnavalkya at King Janaka's court, questioning him relentlessly on the ultimate ground of reality in the Brihadaranyaka Upanishad.
उपनिषद काल · Upanishadic era
The Brihadaranyaka Upanishad describes Gargi rising twice among the assembled sages at Janaka's court to press Yajnavalkya with an unbroken chain of questions — what is the universe woven upon, and what is that woven upon in turn — pushing the inquiry further than any other sage present.
Her exchange with Yajnavalkya is among the very few instances in Vedic literature of a woman engaging as an equal, public participant in high philosophical debate, and she remains cited today as an early and rare recorded voice among Vedic-era women scholars.
