The script this very site's Hindi and Sanskrit text is printed in — 'the writing of the city of the gods,' refined from Brahmi's descendants to become the primary script for Sanskrit, Hindi, Marathi, and Nepali today.
वर्तमान रूप लगभग ११–१३वीं शताब्दी · present form circa 11th-13th century CE
Devanagari took its recognizable form by around the 11th-13th century CE, distinguished by the horizontal line, shirorekha, connecting most letters along the top of a word, and by its precise phonetic structure, in which each symbol corresponds closely to a single sound.
Because Sanskrit texts were preserved and copied across the subcontinent for centuries before Devanagari's own standardization, older manuscripts of the same Vedic and Puranic texts covered throughout this site survive in a range of regional scripts, Devanagari among them, rather than Devanagari alone being their original form.
