One of the Saptarishi, husband of Anasuya — the couple whose extraordinary devotion is held to have given rise to Dattatreya.
सप्तर्षि · Saptarishi
Atri is credited with composing hymns of the Rigveda's fifth mandala. His wife Anasuya is celebrated across Puranic literature for her chastity and devotion, tested in several well-known stories by sages and gods alike.
Tradition holds that Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva, pleased by Anasuya's virtue, were together born to her and Atri as sons — Chandra, Dattatreya, and Durvasa in some tellings, linking Atri's household directly to some of the most significant figures in this chapter.
