The open central courtyard at the heart of traditional home design — a shared, sky-open space for daily chores, family gathering, and ritual alike.
रहन-सहन · Rahan-Sahan
Traditional homes across much of the subcontinent were built around a central aangan, open to the sky, used for everything from drying grain and washing clothes to children's play and evening gatherings, with rooms arranged around it rather than facing an outside street.
The aangan's placement and proportions were traditionally guided by vastu shastra, already covered in this site's Gyan-Vigyan chapter, and the space remains where many household rituals, a tulsi plant at its center, rangoli at its threshold, are still performed even in homes that have otherwise moved toward modern layouts.
